Back to School: Preparing for a Smooth Transition

Back to School: Preparing for a Smooth Transition

The start of each new school year is always a special time for us, and we can’t wait to welcome your children back to campus! For parents of younger students, the back-to-school transition can sometimes feel overwhelming — not only for the students themselves but also for the whole family. At Westbury Christian School, we believe that a little preparation can go a long way in making the first days of school enjoyable and successful for your child.

One of the key ways to set your child up for success is by helping them ease back into the structure of school life. Here are a few simple but effective tips to help your younger student feel ready for their first day at Westbury on August 14th.

Get Their Sleep Schedule Back on Track

Summer often comes with later bedtimes and more relaxed mornings, but getting back into a routine is essential to make the start of school smoother for your child. Sleep is crucial for academic performance and emotional well-being, and younger students need plenty of rest to thrive.

  • Start Gradually: Begin adjusting your child’s sleep schedule a week or two before school starts. Shift bedtime earlier by 15-20 minutes each night so their internal clock can gradually adjust. This can help them feel more alert when the school year begins.
  • Morning Routines Matter: Set a consistent wake-up time that aligns with school hours. This helps their body adapt to waking up early, making the first few days of school feel more familiar.

Limit Screen Time

While devices are a part of modern life, excessive screen time can interfere with sleep, attention, and social interactions, which are key components of a successful school experience.

  • Set Screen Time Boundaries: Consider reducing screen time in the evenings, especially an hour before bed. This can help your child wind down and avoid the overstimulation that often comes with TV, tablets, or video games.
  • Encourage Other Activities: Now is a great time to encourage your child to get back into reading, playing outside, or doing other quiet activities that don’t involve screens. This shift can help your child refocus and develop better habits for learning.

Reacquaint Them with the School Routine

While we all enjoy the break that summer brings, the relaxed schedule makes it hard to get back into the routine of school. With some preparation, your child can transition smoothly from summer freedom to school routines.

  • Practice Daily Schedules: Start structuring your day to mirror a school schedule. Have your child wake up at the time they will need to on school days, eat meals at regular times, and engage in academic activities like reading or writing.
  • Talk About the Upcoming Year: Take time to talk about the exciting things the new school year brings. Discussing school subjects, friends, and activities in a positive light can help alleviate any first-day jitters and build anticipation for a great year ahead.

Prepare for the Emotional Transition

The start of the school year can also bring emotional challenges for younger students. Whether it’s the excitement of seeing friends again or the nerves of being in a new grade, acknowledging your child’s feelings and offering reassurance can make a huge difference.

  • Visit the School: Be sure to attend the scheduled back to school events coming up. Walking through the hallways, seeing their new classroom, and meeting their teacher can help your child feel more comfortable when school officially starts.
  • Validate Their Feelings: If your child expresses nervousness or anxiety, let them know it’s completely normal to feel that way. Reassure them that they will have the support they need and that their teachers are there to help them succeed.

A smooth transition starts at home. Getting back into the school routine can be a big adjustment for the whole family, but with some preparation, you can make the transition from summer freedom to school days smooth.

We’re counting down to August 14, grateful for the opportunity to serve your family and partner with you in your child’s academic and spiritual growth. We know this school year will be full of exciting moments, challenges, and accomplishments. We look forward to seeing all the incredible things your child will achieve, and we’re here to support them every step of the way. To all our returning Wildcats and those joining us for the first time, we are so excited to welcome you back to school!

WCS Summer Roundup: Faith, Fun, and Wildcats on the Move

WCS Summer Roundup: Faith, Fun, and Wildcats on the Move

It’s been a fantastic summer so far at Westbury Christian School — and we’re just getting started!

Honoring the Class of 2025
We kicked off the season by celebrating a truly exceptional group of Wildcats — the Class of 2025. These graduates leave behind a legacy of leadership, faith, and friendship. As they step into their next chapter, they do so with the strength of a Christ-centered education and a deep connection to our Wildcat family. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!

Wildcats Travel: High School Trip to London & Paris
Summer might mean a break from the classroom, but the learning and growing haven’t stopped. Our students and families are making the most of summer—from global adventures to acts of service right here at home. This month, a group of high school students explored the history, culture, and beauty of London and Paris, taking in iconic landmarks and broadening their worldviews. It was an unforgettable adventure, including a visit to Buckingham Palace and tours of Westminster Abbey, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and a Seine River Cruise. Our Wildcats are staying connected and living out their faith in every corner of the world.

Wildcats on the Move: Purposeful Summers
At the same time, other WCS students joined together locally for meaningful service—packing meals and decorating lunch bags for Kids’ Meals, a Houston-based nonprofit that works to end childhood hunger by delivering free, healthy meals to preschool-aged children living in poverty. Kids’ Meals is the only home meal delivery program in the nation specifically focused on this vulnerable age group. Each weekday, they deliver more than 9,000 meals to Houston’s youngest residents—and when school is out, that number rises to over 16,000 meals daily, ensuring that every child in the home has access to nutritious food. Our Wildcats played a small but heartfelt role by brightening the lunch bags with cheerful artwork and notes, making each meal feel a little more personal and joyful. Summer at Westbury Christian isn’t just a break—it’s a season of growth, service, and joy.

Camp Season was a Blast!
Summer fun is synonymous with Camp Season at WCS—and this year was no exception! Our summer camps buzzed with energy, learning, and laughter as students of all ages came together to grow their skills and build new friendships. From athletic drills to creative challenges, each camp provided an opportunity to shine. High school athletes stepped up as mentors and role models, helping lead activities and encouraging younger campers. Campers wrapped up their sessions with awards and celebrations that recognized effort, growth, and good sportsmanship—proving once again that at WCS, summer is a season to play with purpose.

Senior Spotlight: Cayley Carrington, Kaitlyn Darby, Makayla Delasbour, and Marcelo Gonzalez

It is our pleasure to introduce our final four amazing members of the WCS 2025 senior class: Cayley Carrington, Kaitlyn Darby, Makayla Delasbour, and Marcelo Gonzalez. Please join us in congratulating all of our 2025 graduates and pray for them as they embark on their next journeys.

.

Meet Cayley Carrington

Favorite Bible Verse: Psalm 46:5

Cayley moved to Westbury Christian in the eighth grade. From the very first day, she felt welcomed and was instantly embraced by a group of friends who have continuously supported and encouraged her in everything. Coming from a larger, public school, this was a new experience for her.

She has been involved in varsity cheerleading (both sideline and competition), the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, the ASL Club, the yearbook, and the Garden Club. She’s grateful for the opportunity to participate in so many activities and meet new people through each of them.

Over the years, Cayley’s relationship with God has grown. “I have learned how to implement my faith in my everyday life,” says Cayley. Participating in the spring break mission trip to New Iberia, Louisiana my junior year greatly influenced my walk with Christ. I met so many amazing people, and hearing their stories and testimonies really gave me a new perspective.”

One of Cayley’s favorite memories with her friends was competing in the TAPPS State Cheerleading Competition. Not only was it their last time competing with all the seniors, but they also won! Cayley remembers the trip as being filled with laughter and good energy. “It was the best day, and I will take those memories with me for a long time!”

After graduation, Cayley plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she will major in Architectural Studies. She is excited to try new things and meet new people. Cayley also intends to visit WCS for some sporting events and possibly for graduation next year.

Introducing Kaitlyn Darby

Favorite Bible Verse: Proverbs 3:5-6

Kaitlyn joined WCS in the ninth grade and describes her experience in three words: family, community, and faithful. Her favorite subject was Anatomy because she enjoyed learning about the body and how it works.

Coach Haley has become a role model for Kaitlyn during her time at WCS. “She is always there to listen and help or even give advice,” said Kaitlyn. “She has really made my high school journey one to remember. From her office to on the court or even out on the field, she is amazing and just makes everything better and an amazing coach. She literally does it all!”

Kaitlyn has been an active student participating in Interact Club, volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and field, and softball. She believes each activity shaped her experience in a really positive way. “You just build like little families and like a sisterhood and just sticking with each other during tough times and learning life skills,” Kaitlyn explained.

Attending Westbury Christian has significantly helped Kaitlyn grow in her faith. A chapel with speaker Coach Carr earlier in her high school journey particularly influenced her. Through these experiences, Kaitlyn discovered a love for the Bible and developed a strong desire to learn and understand it more.

After graduation, Kaitlyn plans to earn an associate degree and work as a physical therapist assistant. Later, she’ll decide where to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Kaitlyn hopes to stay connected to the WCS community and plans to come back to help with soccer.

Meet Makayla Delasbour

Favorite Bible Verse: Proverbs 3:5-6

When asked to describe her experience at WCS in three words, Makayla replied, “Built- lifelong- friendships.” Makayla joined the Wildcat family in her ninth-grade year. Coach Hawley’s class was her favorite because she enjoyed the Steve Hartman videos and how Coach Hawley gives his all in teaching his students.

After graduation, Makayla plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work, earn a law degree, and become a criminal defense attorney. She’s looking forward to the next chapter in her life and is most excited about being in a new environment, meeting new people, and unlocking new opportunities.

Introducing Marcelo Gonzalez

Favorite Bible Verse: Colossians 3:23

Marcelo joined the WCS student body in ninth grade and found his classmates welcoming and accepting. During his time here, Marcelo discovered his athletic talents and enjoyed playing Wildcat football and baseball. He appreciates the incredible coaches who taught him that life outside of high school should focus on God.

Biology and chemistry are Marcelo’s favorite classes, and he enjoys learning the material. So much so, Marcelo plans to attend medical school and become a physician. His proudest academic moment was receiving his college acceptance letter.

Attending chapel and the overall Christian environment at WCS helped Marcelo grow in his faith. The senior retreat, in particular, had a significant influence on his personal walk during which he grew closer to God. He will always remember hanging out with friends around the campfire.

Marcelo’s advice to younger WCS students is to “keep a smile on your face because they are contagious and can make someone’s day.” He looks forward to his new path in life and plans to visit WCS to help out with the baseball and football programs from time to time.

Westbury Worships Everywhere

Westbury Worships Everywhere

Westbury Christian School is more than a place of learning—it’s a vibrant, faith-filled community that reflects the beautiful diversity of the Kingdom of God. With over 100 Christian churches and congregations represented among our Wildcat families, our school is a tapestry of worship traditions, spiritual practices, and deep-rooted faith.

Each family brings something uniquely meaningful to our shared journey, whether through the quiet strength of prayer, the joyful celebration of community worship, or the daily commitment to living out their faith. This religious diversity enriches our campus culture and deepens our collective understanding of God’s presence in our community.

At WCS, we embrace this diversity as a strength. It reminds us that the body of Christ is vast and varied—united not by uniformity, but by love, faith, and a shared purpose. Together, we learn from one another, grow in wisdom, and celebrate the many ways God is honored across our community.

Westbury Christian School is, indeed, a reflection of the Kingdom: faithful, wise, and diverse.

Senior Spotlight: Cayley Carrington, Kaitlyn Darby, Makayla Delasbour, and Marcelo Gonzalez

Senior Spotlight: Glynn Clements, DeMarion Morgan, Sophia Rodriguez, and Sydney Smith

We are pleased to introduce our next four incredible members of the WCS 2025 senior class: Glynn Clements, DeMarion Morgan, Sophia Rodriguez, and Sydney Skyler Smith.

Meet Glynn Clements

Favorite Bible Verse: Philippians 4:13

Glynn Clements saved the best for last, joining the Wildcat community for his senior year. He found everyone at WCS to be very friendly and helpful. Glynn’s favorite subject is Economics because it helped him understand inflation, supply and demand, unemployment rates, and civilian labor forces.

He will always remember his teachers, Ms. Ballard, Ms. Carr, Coach Carr, Ms. Banks, Ms. Rivera, and Ms. DeMoss, for their support and encouragement to keep going and not give up. Glynn was particularly proud of his academic progress when he earned good grades in his first semester here.

The senior retreat had a significant impact on Glynn’s faith journey, and his trust in God has grown throughout the school year. He learned to pray during the day and to give his problems to God. He advises younger students to “trust God to take the wheel and steer you in the right direction.”

Glynn enjoyed playing basketball for the Wildcats and formed many new friendships and experiences through the sport. He will always remember iFly as a special learning experience. He would like to be remembered as a hopeful person and a leader. Glynn looks forward to attending college next year and possibly becoming a basketball trainer one day. He plans to return to support his Wildcats during basketball season.

Introducing DeMarion Morgan

Favorite Bible Verse: Romans 12:2

DeMarion has enjoyed his time at WCS, especially on the basketball court. He’ll never forget his last basketball game and would love to relive that day. DeMarion’s favorite subject is math because Mr. Echols teaches valuable life lessons alongside the curriculum.

Before joining the WCS community, DeMarion knew about God, but now he knows Him on a deeper, more personal level. To help younger students grow in their faith, DeMarion encourages them to spend time in quiet reflection. He is grateful to his good friend, Glynn, who encouraged DeMarion to keep his head up and his eye on the finish line.

DeMarion is looking forward to playing basketball in college next year and plans to come back to WCS for basketball games.

Meet Sophia Rodriguez

Favorite Bible Verse: Romans 12:12

Sophia joined WCS in her freshman year and describes her experience here as interesting, amazing, and eventful. Her favorite class is Anatomy because she is fascinated by how the human body works. Ms. Lund had a significant impact on Sophia’s life. She helped her through stressful situations by teaching her to “take a breath” and that “things don’t always work out the way we want.”

An active student, Sophia participated in volleyball, soccer, track, National Spanish Honors Society, HOSA, and ASL. She credits all of them for helping her find God when something might not go her way. She also discovered a talent for traditional folkloric dances from different countries during chapel.

Sophia encourages younger students not to give up on God even in the worst times because “He’ll never give you more than he thinks you can handle.” She felt encouraged by all of the girls in her class at various times and in different ways. Her favorite memory of classmates is sitting around the campfire together, stargazing and telling scary stories at their senior retreat. She’ll also never forget the 2023 homecoming game day when everyone dressed and showed their school spirit.

After graduation, Sophia plans to attend college and stay connected with WCS friends by helping with the Hispanic Heritage Month chapels.

Introducing Sydney Smith

Favorite Bible Verse: 2 Timothy 1:7

When asked to describe her time at WCS in three words, Sydney replied, “A learning experience.” She became a Wildcat in seventh grade and has learned to trust God in every situation.

Sydney’s favorite class is AP Physics because it taught her many life principles that she continues to use daily. She forever thanks Mr. Blaine for being an incredible teacher and role model. Sydney’s favorite memories with classmates include the trip to Impact last year and mini-golfing.

After graduation, Sydney plans to attend Baylor University to pursue a major in psychology with a minor in social work. She also plans to cheer at the collegiate level.

Westbury Worships Through Service

Westbury Worships Through Service

At Westbury Christian School, worship is expressed through action, service, and a genuine love for others. This spring, our students exemplified their faith in remarkable ways, demonstrating what it truly means to be the hands and feet of Jesus. From mission trips to community outreach projects, Westbury worships through service, and the impact has been both profound and far-reaching.

Spring Break Mission Trip—High School Students in Action

Over Spring Break, 20 of our high school students traveled to New Iberia, Louisiana, to partner with the New Iberia Church of Christ for their Model City Mission. This incredible outreach program seeks to serve and uplift the local community, and our students stepped right into that mission.

Throughout the weekend, students painted two homes, bonded with each other and church members over delicious local meals, and gathered each night for powerful devotionals. The evenings didn’t end there—some students even initiated additional Bible studies on their own, a beautiful display of their growing faith and commitment. While there was plenty of fun and memory-making, the true heart of the trip was about selflessness—doing something bigger than themselves to further God’s Kingdom.

3rd Grade Project HUG—Serving from the Heart

Our youngest leaders showed that age is no limit when it comes to serving others. As part of Project HUG, our 3rd graders held a food drive and spent a day volunteering at the Houston Food Bank. There, they bagged, sealed, and boxed 6 pallets of rice—enough to provide over 6,400 meals to families in need!

Adding a special touch to their service, the students also unveiled water bottles they designed themselves—an expression of creativity, care, and community. Our third graders made a lasting difference through every scoop of rice and every smile shared.

Sophomore/Junior Serve Day—Compassion in Action

On March 31st, our sophomore and junior classes spent the day at Impact Houston Church of Christ, working with their homeless ministry. Students rolled up their sleeves and got to work—organizing supplies, cleaning facilities, preparing and serving meals, and sorting clothing donations.

They also poured their hearts into creating Easter cards for the children’s ministry, ensuring that every detail was filled with love and encouragement. It was a day of compassion in action and a beautiful reminder of the impact young people can have when they serve with purpose.

Living Our Faith by Serving Others

At WCS, we believe that true worship is a lifestyle. These moments of service are more than just events—they are acts of worship that express the love and teachings of Christ. Whether it is painting a house, packing food, or writing cards, our students are learning to worship God with their words, hands, and hearts.

Westbury worships through service, and through that, lives are changed.

Senior Spotlight: Cayley Carrington, Kaitlyn Darby, Makayla Delasbour, and Marcelo Gonzalez

Senior Spotlight: Oluwaseyi Adodo, Hunter Morgan, Juergen Padmore, and Joel Garcia

We are pleased to introduce four more incredible members of the WCS 2025 senior class: Oluwaseyi Adodo, Hunter Morgan, Juergen Padmore, and Joel Garcia

Introducing Oluwaseyi Adodo

Favorite Bible Verse: Isaiah 41:10

Oluwaseyi has been a WCS Wildcat since she was in our K4 program. Her favorite class is Biology or Gospels because she “really liked the teachers and how they taught.” Mr. Reid greatly impacted Oluwaseyi, helping her build confidence and guiding her as she assumed leadership positions. “I am grateful to be surrounded by people who want me to succeed,” she said.

Singing songs of praise in Coach O’s classes helped strengthen Oluwaseyi‘s faith. She also appreciates that she can publicly pray at lunch or before a test without being reprimanded. She advises younger students to pursue a relationship with God and trust His plan for their lives.

During her time at WCS, Oluwaseyi was involved in HOSA club, ASL club, student council, garden club, NHS, Spanish Honor Society, golf, band, and athletic training. Her favorite memory is the freshman retreat at camp, and she would love to relive character day of homecoming week her junior year.

Oluwaseyi discovered her leadership skills at WCS, and her friends always pushed her to work harder and be a better person. She’s excited about graduation day and attending college, and she plans to visit WCS in the future.

Meet Hunter Morgan

Hunter joined the WCS community in the ninth grade. Coach Glover helped him adjust during his freshman year. Hunter has always enjoyed science, which is his favorite class.

During his time at WCS, Hunters has grown closer to God and learned more about the Bible. His advice to younger students is to pay attention in Bible class, as it really helps them grow in their faith.

The football and track teams helped Hunter feel like he belonged at WCS and he believes he would not be the same person if he had not played sports in high school. His favorite memory is winning the playoff football game his freshman year.

Hunter hopes to demonstrate to other athletes that, even if you attend a small school, playing college football at the Division One level is still possible. After graduation, Hunter plans to attend college and intends to visit WCS often.

Introducing Juergen Padmore

Juergen describes his time at WCS as a “great Christian experience.” He enrolled as a junior and felt a sense of belonging during the chapel services. History is Juergen’s favorite subject because he finds it interesting, and it always repeats itself.

The teacher that Juergen will remember most is Mr. Echols for the way he teaches math and his amazing, friendly personality. His proudest achievement was becoming senior class president, and his favorite memories with classmates are from football and soccer practices. If Juergen could relive one day at WCS, it would be winning the homecoming football game.

Juergen’s walk with Christ was influenced by his class trip to Impact Church. “The experience really opened my eyes about other people’s lives compared to mine.” After graduation, Juergen plans to attend Texas A&M, followed by law school.

Meet Joel Garcia

Favorite Bible Verse: Proverbs 18:24

Joel first joined WCS during his freshman year. Being surrounded by people who believe in God convinced Joel that WCS was the right school for him. “I have made friends that I now consider brothers,” Joel shared. Bible is Joel’s favorite class. It stood out to him because Coach Hawley makes it fun and engaging. “Coach Hawley truly takes his time to help us learn more about God and never puts pressure on us.”

Coach Julio Olivia also had a significant impact on Joel. “Never in my life have I had a greater coach,” Julio explained. “He truly made me love the game of baseball again and was there for me every step of the way. I am very blessed to have met him, and I am very grateful for him believing in me and putting his time and effort into the team. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am now today. I’ve learned so much from him and hope to continue to learn from him in the future.”

Joel’s faith has grown significantly during his time at WCS. “Going to school in an environment where I can express my love towards God has made me want to get closer to Him. It’s great to have the option to go to a teacher and be able to get advice and know you are not alone.” Joel encourages younger students to stay true to themselves and let no one distract them from their path with Christ.

Among Joel’s favorite memories with classmates are Whataburger trips after baseball and soccer games. Baseball and football taught him discipline, passion for sports, and what it’s like to be part of a brotherhood and the ups and downs you’ll have along the way. If he could relive one day from WCS it would be his sophomore year athletic banquet. Joel won 2nd team district that day and was proud to stand in front of his parents and coaches.

Joel is excited to begin the next phase of his life, attend college, and live independently. He also looks forward to giving back to his parents for all the years they supported him. Joel plans to stay connected to the WCS community through the younger friends he made along the way and by attending a couple of sports games. Perhaps he will even become an alumni Wildcat baseball coach someday.
